Our first views of Aoraki / Mount Cook

We really hit the nail on the head by bringing a boat with us on this trip. This was our first stop that really showed how popular everything you read about is. Turns out, when they publish sites in a book, other people go there as well. We did a beautiful hike up to Hooker Lake, but we were accompanied by hundreds of other people from all over the world.

The aforementioned Hooker Lake with a cute little piece of glacier ice floating in it.
Good Morning

The night was kind of exciting – there was a huge BOOM! Which actually shook the van, followed by a huge wind that rocked the van and knocked down a couple of tents in the park. Turns out, there had been a huge avalanche accompanied by the shockwave of wind that rocketed through the canyon. Well, that is what we surmised after talking to a ranger the next day.

We loaded up the boat in a pack and hit the trail for Tasman Lake.

Getting onto the water

When we hit the lake, it was covered with a thick layer of mist that was quickly burning off.

Ice
It was hard not to get up super close and personal with the ice, but they are quite dangerous.
Glacier Ice – came off small chunks that littered the water.
